South Maid #10 thread.
Size 7 steel crochet hook.
1 small bead (optional).
Size approx. 4" tall.
Starting at bottom edge, ch 28.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each rem ch across. (27sc).
Row 2: Ch 3, (counts as first dc in row now and throughout), turn; dc in next sc, *ch 1, sk next 2 sc, work 2 dc in next sc; rep from * 6 times more, ch 1, sk next 2 sc, dc in each of last 2 sc. (8ch = 1 sps).
Row 3: Ch 1, turn; skip first dc, sc in next dc; * sc in next ch 1 sp, sc in each of next 2 dc; rep from * 6 times more, sc in next ch 1 sp, sc in next dc (leave ch 3 at end of row unworked). (24 sc).
Rows 4-15: Rep rows 2 & 3, 6 times more.
Row 16: Ch 3, turn; dc in next sc, ch 1, (if using bead put bead on hook and work 1 sc to secure it), sk next 2 sc, dc in each of last 2 sc.
Row 17: Ch 1, turn; sk first dc, sc in next dc; sc in next ch 1 sp, sc in next dc (leave ch 3 unworked). (6 sc).
Row 18: Ch 3, turn; dc in each of next 2 sc..
Row 19: Ch 8, sk next dc, sl st in next dc..
Row 20: Ch 1, turn; work 12 sc over ch 8 lp (for top ring), sl st in same lp. Do not finish off, cont. with edging and trunk shaping as follows.
Edging and Trunk shaping: Do not turn; working down side of tree along ends of rows, work 2 sc in first dc row, *work (sc, ch 3, sc) in next sc row, work 2 sc in next dc row; rep from * down to last sc row, work 3 sc in last sc.. Cont. across foundation ch edge, sc in each of next 12 sts, work trunk as follows: ch 8, dc in 5th ch from hook and in each of next 3 chs (trunk made); sk next st on foundation ch edge, sc in each of next 12 sts, work 3 sc in last st.. Continuing up other side of tree, work 2 sc in each dc row and work (sc, ch 3, sc) in each sc row up to top ring, sl st in st at base of top ring. Finish off.
